Shocking news came from a Bucks County grand jury Wednesday morning that the Solebury School outside New Hope was the scene of a cover-up for 50 years to hide sexual relationships between faculty and students.

Solebury School to remove mentions of former administrator

Citing the grand jury’s findings that John D. Brown was an administrator “who did not intervene, investigate and protect the students in his care from instance of sexual abuse by faculty and/or staff,” Solebury’s board of trustees determined that honoring his service “is not in keeping with our school’s values and the importance of our role as educators and trusted partners in the education of our students,” according to head of school Tom Wilschutz and board chairman Scott Bolenbaugh.
“In the coming weeks, therefore, those elements that honor John D. Brown’s time as an administrator at Solebury School, including the name of the athletic center, will be removed.”
The school said it still recognized Brown’s “many contributions” during his tenure. An alumnus of Solebury School, Brown served as its head of school for 19 years, from 1989 to 2008.

Brown was not accused of any sexual misconduct, but rather failed to act when alleged abuse was reported to him, the grand jury said. When called before the grand jury, Brown, 67, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, refusing to answer any questions, according to the report.
“The abuse could have been stopped if those select school administrators intervened or investigated when the abuse was ongoing,” the grand jury wrote.
