The highest office in the Priesthood established by Joseph Smith was the “Prophet, Priest, and King” over the Kingdom of God or Council of Fifty. This presiding King and Priest presided over the Sealing Keys of Elijah to “administer in all the ordinances”, as the One Anointed and Appointed (D&C 132:7). Joseph was sustained to this office by the Council of Fifty on April 11, 1844. Brigham was sustained on March 1, 1845. John Taylor was anointed and ordained to this office on February 4, 1885. After that the Council of Fifty fell into oblivion, but we believe Benjamin F. Johnson as the last original member of the Council of Fifty passed down the keys to this authority, and that’s how we have the Priesthood today.
